Local efforts to nominate properties to the National Register of Historic
Places, as well as conversion of buildings to public museums, indicate
a strong local appreciation of distinctive architectural features. Historic
buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places
or preserved by local historical societies fall within the following contexts:
- domesticóhistoric houses in St. Agatha (St. Agatha Historical Society),
Madawaska (Madawaska Historical Society), and Van Buren (Notre HÈritage
Vivant/Our Living Heritage and private individual);
- religiousóSt. David Catholic Church (active) in Madwaska and the former
church in Lille (LíAssociation culturelle et historique du Mont-Carmel);
- transportationórailroad station in Fort Kent (Fort Kent Historical
Society), railroad water tower and caboose in Frenchville (Frenchville
Historical Society), and railroad-related building in Van Buren (Notre
HÈritage Vivant/Our Living Heritage.);
- educationóschoolhouses in Madawaska (Madawaska Historical Society)
and Van Buren (Notre HÈritage Vivant/Our Living Heritage.); and
- militaryóFort Kent blockhouse (Maine Bureau of Parks and Recreation).
Eight properties within the study area are listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. The majority are open to the public as museums or
historic sites. They are presented starting at Fort Kent and moving downstream
to Van Buren, Maine.
